WINNIPEG, MB - Community doesn’t happen by chance, but through the commitment of those invested in creating it. At Maples Academy of Dance, in Northwest Winnipeg, their team of instructors, dancers, and dance supporters have spent the past decade and a half committed to building a strong community that goes far beyond the stage. Heading into their 15th anniversary season, the value of creating strong communities, and empowering youth through the arts, remains the focus of their dance programs.
“I think NBA star Derrick Rose said it best when he said, ‘A strong community of people who believe in your potential can make all the difference in the world’. My sister and I had that growing up, and now we get to pay it forward to the next generation,” said Shauna Jurczak, who owns Maples Academy of Dance with her sister, Jamie Jurczak.
The community that surrounds Maples Academy of Dance is extremely special to the sister duo, who grew up right around the corner from their dance studio and graduated high school from Maples Collegiate. This community is home to them, and they continue to see the impressive potential in the neighbourhoods that surround them and in the students who attend classes - with dancers ranging in age from two years old to adult, taking a variety of recreational and competitive dance classes. It is clear to them that programs like theirs can have an extremely valuable impact on the community they serve.
“Every student who walks into our studio has potential, and it’s our goal to encourage every single one of them to find their own inner superstar,” notes Shauna. “It may not seem like much, but we believe strong communities start with confident, healthy, and empowered youth who have someone to believe in them. If we can help inspire even a handful of kids and teens to become leaders, changemakers, and positive members of the community, then we’re doing something right!”
As Maples Academy embarks on their 15th season, they’re looking forward to even more community building, connecting youth to the arts, and celebrating 15 years of superstar dancing. Registration for the 2024-25 Dance Session is now open at www.maplesdance.com.
